Breaking Open the Word (Youth) - 7th Sunday of Easter
“Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name.”
John 17:11
» ReadingsWhat’s happening
This Sunday’s Gospel takes place just before Jesus is arrested. He knows that His disciples are about to enter a confusing and uncertain time. Everything familiar is about to change, and the people who have followed Him closely will soon find themselves afraid, scattered, and unsure of what comes next.
And yet, in that moment, Jesus turns to the Father and prays for them.
Not for success, comfort, or an easy life, but simply:
“Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name.”
There is something deeply reassuring about this prayer because Jesus speaks about His disciples with such love and tenderness. He knows them completely; their strengths, weaknesses, fears, and struggles, and still He entrusts them to the Father’s care.
This is not the prayer of someone disappointed in His followers.
It is the prayer of someone who loves deeply and desires that the people He cares for remain close to God no matter what lies ahead.
What it means to me
There are seasons in life when things feel uncertain and we are trying to figure things out. We think about the future, wonder whether we are making the right decisions, and sometimes feel pressure to keep up with everyone around us. It can feel like we always need to have a plan, an answer, or a clearer sense of who we are becoming.
But this Gospel reminds us that even in moments when we feel uncertain, we are not alone or forgotten.
Before the disciples face their fears and failures, Jesus is already praying for them. Before they fully understand what is happening, Jesus places them into the Father’s hands.
That means our relationship with God does not begin with us trying to prove ourselves worthy or spiritually strong. It begins with the simple truth that we are already loved, already known, and already being held by Him.
Jesus does not pray: “Make them perfect.” Instead, He prays: “Keep them.”
Keep them close.
Keep them rooted.
Keep them faithful.
Keep them connected to who they truly are.
There is something hopeful about knowing that even when life feels messy or unclear, Jesus continues to pray for us with the same love.
Today
Throughout the Gospels, we often see Jesus turning to the Father in prayer. Sometimes before important moments, sometimes in moments of difficulty, and sometimes simply to remain close to Him. And in this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear Jesus praying not only for Himself, but for His disciples.
Prayer was never meant to be complicated or reserved only for moments when we have everything together. Often, the most honest prayers are also the simplest.
This week, take a few quiet moments each day to turn your heart toward God, even in the middle of your busy and distracted life. You do not need perfect words or long prayers. You can simply say: “Jesus, keep me close.”
Keep me close when life feels overwhelming.
Keep me close when I become distracted or tired.
Keep me close when I struggle to stay faithful.
Keep me close when I cannot see clearly what lies ahead.
And trust that just as Jesus prayed for His disciples, He continues to hold you in prayer too.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for loving me even in moments when I feel uncertain or weak. Help me to stay close to You and to trust that You are guiding me, even when I cannot see the full path ahead. Keep my heart rooted in Your love and help me to remember that I am never alone. Amen.
