Anointing of the Sick
“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests
the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord,
that he may raise them up and save them.
And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God
by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.”
– CCC 1499
The Anointing of the Sick is a beautiful Sacrament of healing and spiritual comfort offered by Christ through the Church. It is for the gravely ill, whose sickness entails danger of death, providing an encounter with Christ who offers comfort and relief. Catholics who are critically ill or dying are often profoundly comforted and strengthened by this Sacrament.
It is important to note that the Anointing of the Sick is NOT solely for those at the point of death, but is also for healing and restoration to health. This Sacrament can be administered to a family member or parishioner who is confined to their home for a long period, or when they require hospitalisation, are facing surgery, or have become significantly frailer in health. The Sacrament can be repeated if the sick person falls gravely ill again after recovering, or should their condition worsen during the same illness. This Sacrament can only be administered by a Priest.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick grants God’s forgiveness and can bring immense comfort and healing during a time of suffering.
