Catechetical Ministry

Accompanying the Journey of Faith

Through our Catechesis programs, the children and youth of our parish come to know God personally, grow as disciples, and feel at home in the life of the Church community.

  • Our mainstream Catechesis program prepares children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation (at Level 2), First Holy Communion (at Level 3) and Confirmation (at Level 10).

We also offer Home Catechesis and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Those considering baptism may explore the faith through our RCIC and RCIY programs.

And Liturgy of the Word with Children (LOWC) helps children experience the Gospel in an engaging way.

  • If you enjoy sharing your faith with children and youth and feel called to serve as a Catechist, take that first step and reach out to us. Don’t feel hindered by the lack of knowledge or experience as you will be guided and mentored along the way.

  • Assist the Catechist in many non-teaching aspects of catechesis. Depending on your gifts and talent, it could involve helping to maintain reverence, safety and discipline in the classroom; helping out in art and craft work; or assisting in countless other ways.

  • Additional classroom assistance, especially in the lower-Primary levels, are provided by a team of Parent Volunteers.

  • Teenagers value the example of their peers and this makes the role of a Youth Facilitator very important, serving at the Confirmation levels as the sounding board and an effective communication channel for the youth.

  • Assist our Catechists with your special skills in other areas, helping to keep things organised and introducing new ways to deliver our sessions.

FAQ about being a Catechist

  • Yes! What matters most is your love for Christ and your willingness to learn. Many catechists start with limited knowledge but grow through the training, ongoing formation, and experience gained from serving. You’ll also have support from your fellow catechists and the provided session materials.

  • No formal teaching background is required. What’s more important is a desire to share your faith and journey with others. You’ll pick up facilitation and classroom management skills along the way, through mentoring and observation.

  • Yes! Each session comes with a detailed lesson guide that includes the objectives, key messages, activities, and reflection points. The session plan helps you stay on track while allowing flexibility to share your own faith experiences and adapt to the children’s needs.

  • Typically no. Catechists work as a team and take turns leading sessions. This rotation allows everyone to rest, prepare, and support one another.

  • It’s perfectly fine. We understand that family or work commitments may arise. Just inform your team or coordinator in advance — we look out for each other and help cover when needed.
