Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) Ministry is a profound call to serve Christ in the most sacred aspect of the Mass. EMHCs are lay faithful who are appointed and commissioned by the Parish Priest to assist the Ordinary Ministers (the Priests) in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ.

This ministry is rooted in a fervent love and deep reverence for the Holy Eucharist, which is the Real Presence of Jesus Christ. As those honoured to "hold and give" Jesus, EMHCs are called to live as exemplary Catholics, striving for holiness and fostering an intimate relationship with the Lord.

Our Vocation to Serve

Our EMHCs fulfill a crucial role in extending the sacramental life of the Church:

1. Assisting at Mass (In Church)

EMHCs assist the Mass celebrant in distributing the Eucharist to the congregation, ensuring the orderly and reverent reception of Holy Communion during liturgical celebrations.

2. Serving the Sick and Homebound (Outreach)

More than just serving in the church, EMHCs extend the parish community’s care by bringing the Holy Eucharist to our sick and homebound brothers and sisters in Christ. This vital outreach keeps those confined to their homes connected to the source and summit of our faith.

Formation and Commitment

Annual Renewal

The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion renew their commitment annually during the Mass of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.

Ongoing Formation

To help ministers embody the likeness of Christ and serve wholeheartedly, the ministry organises activities aimed at evangelising and forging closer bonds among members:

  • Spiritual Growth: An annual Day of Recollection/Retreat, periodic Eucharistic Adoration, and monthly Bible sharing (which may include the Liturgy of The Hours/Divine Office).

  • Community: Fellowship activities and Faith Formation courses/talks.
