Lectors Ministry

The ministry of the Lector is a sacred calling to proclaim the Living Word of God to the assembled faithful. It is a vital service that helps bring the Scriptures to life within our liturgy, nourishing the hearts and minds of those who hear them.

Lectors at the Church of the Holy Family often say this prayer before they proclaim the readings at Mass:

"Lord, invest me with your power as I prepare to proclaim the marvel of your message.
I have prepared my reading; I have tried to take within me, the meaning of what I am about to proclaim.
Help me to proclaim not just with my lips, but with my whole heart and soul.
May your Spirit live in me and fill the holy words that I proclaim. Amen."

Through their prayerful proclamation, lectors strive for the Word of God to truly come alive and resonate deeply within the hearts of all who listen.


Preparation Sessions

Being a lector requires careful preparation, not just reading aloud. Our lectors commit to deeply reflecting on the assigned readings. To support this, preparatory sessions are held regularly:

  • When: Every [Insert Day of Week, e.g., Tuesday]

  • Time: [Insert Time, e.g., 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM]

  • What happens: Lectors for the upcoming weekend Masses gather to break open the Word of God, share reflections, and discuss the readings. These sessions also provide a valuable opportunity for lectors to practise their assigned readings and receive constructive feedback to improve their proclamation.


What is Expected of a Lector?

To serve as a Lector at the Church of the Holy Family, we look for individuals who are:

  • A baptised and practising Catholic.

  • An adult who is committed and mature in handling, sharing, and reflecting on Scripture.

  • Able to commit to reading duty once or twice a month.

  • Able to attend the [Insert Day of Week, e.g., Tuesday] evening preparatory sessions ([Insert Time, e.g., 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM]) once or twice a month, depending on your reading schedule.
