About the Legion of Mary
The Legion of Mary is a lay Catholic Organisation founded in Dublin, Ireland, on Wed, 7 Sep 1921. It operates globally, governed by a system of Councils, with the smallest unit called a Praesidium. Each Praesidium holds weekly meetings where prayer, reports, and discussions are intermingled.
Objectives
The Legion's objective is the glory of God through the holiness of its members. This is developed by prayer and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary's and the Church's work of advancing the reign of Christ.
Why is it called Legion?
The organisation is structured like the ancient Roman Legion, known for its courage, loyalty, discipline, obedience, and fighting spirit. This military-inspired structure guides the Legionaries in their spiritual combat for souls.
Spirit
The Spirit of the Legion is that of Mary herself – the perfect model of the apostolic spiritual life. United in Mary's strong faith and love of God, Legion members aspire to serve the Lord in all whom they meet.
Membership
The Legion of Mary welcomes Catholics who wish to grow in holiness and serve the Church. Membership is open to all baptised Catholics in good standing with the Church, who have a desire to serve our Lord Jesus Christ through the powerful intercession of His Blessed Mother Mary, Queen of the Apostles. There are two main types of membership:
Active Members: Are required to attend weekly meetings and perform works of service, dedicating themselves to active apostolic work under the guidance of the Blessed Mother.
Auxiliary Members: Undertake a Service of Prayer, which includes the daily recitation of the Legion Prayers (the Catena Legionis) and five decades of the Rosary. This vital spiritual support underpins the active work of the Legion.
Legion Works
Legion works are diverse and carried out in a spirit of faith and charity. They include, but are not limited to:
Home and Hospital visitation
Block Rosary
Parish outreach, such as "Books on Wheels"
Leading Family Rosary Devotion in Church
Teaching Catechism to the young and old
Serving as RCIA Sponsors
Crowd contact and evangelisation
Any other work assigned by the Parish Priest
Why Join the Legion?
"The Legion makes Saints and makes them by the Bushel!" If we want to become good at something, we have to practise it every week. The same is true with holiness! The Legion offers an ideal expression of Catholic vocation, providing a structured opportunity for weekly spiritual growth and apostolic practice. It helps members deepen their faith, develop virtues, and become more effective instruments of God's grace.
