Breaking Open the Word (Youth) - Pentecost

“Receive the Holy Spirit.”

John 20:22

What’s happening

When we hear the story of Pentecost, we often focus on the dramatic moments: the rushing wind, the tongues of fire, the disciples suddenly speaking boldly.

But before all that, the disciples were hiding behind locked doors. Afraid and confused. Unsure what came next. These were ordinary people who had doubted, failed, and run away when things became difficult.

And yet, Jesus had already chosen them.

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them, not to turn them into different people, but to awaken the courage and faith that had already been growing within them.

What it means to me

Sometimes we think we need to become someone else: more confident, more talented, more impressive. But maybe God is not trying to replace who you are. Maybe He is helping you discover who you truly are.

The disciples probably never imagined they would one day preach boldly, change lives, and help build the Church. But Jesus already saw something in them that they could not yet see in themselves.

Pentecost reminds us that God sees more in us than we currently see in ourselves.

The fire was already there.

Today

A lot of us carry quiet thoughts like:

  • “I’m not good enough.”

  • “I don’t really matter.”

  • “Other people are better than me.”

You may only notice your fears, weaknesses, or insecurities.

But God also sees:

  • courage that is still growing

  • kindness that changes people

  • gifts waiting to be awakened

  • strength you have not fully discovered yet

What is one fear or insecurity that keeps you feeling small?

Maybe the Holy Spirit is already working in you more than you realise.

Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit.

Help me to see myself the way God sees me.

Give me courage when I feel uncertain.

Awaken the gifts You have placed within me,

and help me become the person You created me to be.

Amen.
